What Exactly is VESA?
The Video Electronics Standards Association, or VESA, is a group of over 300 companies that came together to create specific VESA standards for the consumer electronics sector. One of these specifications, known as the Flat Display Mounting Interface (FDMI) or VESA Mounting Interface Standard (MIS), covers the mounting hole patterns mentioned above that are found on the back of your TV.
These standardized screw-hole positions are utilized by all significant TV and VESA TV mount manufacturers to guarantee product compatibility.
Determining Your TV’s VESA Size
The VESA standard size of your TV will typically be listed in the user manual or on the manufacturer’s website. If all else fails, you can easily measure it yourself following these three simple steps:
- The horizontal distance between the left and right holes’ centers should be measured. Your first measurement will be provided by this.
- The vertical distance between the top and bottom holes’ centers is measured. The second measurement will be provided as a result.
- If you’re measuring in inches, convert to millimeters (1 inch = 25.4 mm)
VESA specifications are typically shown in millimeters and are read horizontally first, then vertically. For instance, your VESA size will be displayed as 400×200 if the distance between your TV’s mounting holes is 400mm across by 200mm high.
What Are VESA Mount Standards?
For the production of flat-screen televisions and monitors, VESA has created a set of standards. The majority of manufacturers adhere to an industry-wide pattern of mounting holes on the back of the TV or monitor to meet this standard. The VESA hole pattern for flat panel displays can be one of the following sizes:
- 75 mm x 75 mm (75 mm = 2.95 inches)
- 100 mm x 100 mm (100mm = 3.94 inches)
- 200 mm x 200 mm (200 mm = 7.87 inches)
- 400 mm x 400 mm (400 mm = 15.7 inches)
- 600 mm x 400 mm (600 mm = 23.6 inches
- 800 mm x 400 mm (800 mm = 31.5 inches)
VESA Variations
You may find that your TV’s VESA specification doesn’t quite look like what you’ve seen above, and instead includes the term “MIS”. This is merely a means of describing specific hole patterns. Common MIS variations include:
- MIS-D – 75×75 or 100×100. frequently used for computer and smaller TV monitors.
- MIS-E – 200×100
- MIS-F – VESA squares come in a variety of sizes, from 200×200 to 1000×1000.
These will contain a number to confirm the specific size (ex. A 600×600 VESA pattern is represented by MIS-F 600.
